AHA vs BHA. Let our Skincare Experts at Skin Solution make sense of these common questions about exfoliating acid ingredients.

What are AHA and BHA acids?

AHA VS BHA, what’s the difference? AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) and BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) are exfoliating acids that are contained in many anti-aging skincare products. They are an effective ingredients for fighting sings of aging as a result of time, genetics and sun exposure. Our skin sheds dead cells constantly but the process slows as we age. Using an exfoliating product at home or visiting a medispa like ours for skin rejuvenating treatments can restore a youthful glow by removing the dull, uneven texture caused by dry, dead skin cells.

AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid)

The most common AHA’s are glycholic and lactic acids. These work primarily on the skins surface to correct issues like pigmentation/sun damage and dull, dry areas. There are different concentrations in different skincare formulations depending on your desired results and severity of the issues.

BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid)

The most common BHA is salicylic acid. This chemical exfoliant works beneath the skins surface to aleviate common issues associated with normal to oily skin. It helps correct clogged and enlarged pores as well as fight acne. Although powerful, BHA’s are gentle enough to be used by people suffering from rosacea. AHA VS BHA. WHAT TYPE OF CHEMICAL EXFOLIATION SHOULD YOU USE?

As mentioned above, AHA’s work mainly on the surface to address:

BHA’s mainly focus on issues deeper in the skin like:

In our opinion, most people can benefit from using both AHA’s and BHA’s in the skincare regimen. Most of us experience at least one issue at either end of the spectrum of these acids capabilities. Some skincare products include both in a single formulation while some require you to combine two products to harness all the possible benefits.
